Founder & CEO — Rupak Dua, Ph.D.
Founder & CEO, Materials Metric
Dr. Rupak Dua is the Founder of Materials Metric and a biomedical engineer and materials scientist with deep expertise in biomaterials, polymers, surface engineering, coatings, nanostructures, materials characterization, analytical and translational testing. He earned his Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from Florida International University, specializing in biomaterials and tissue engineering, and completed postdoctoral training at the Institute of Orthopedic Research & Education at the Texas Medical Center, where he developed advanced ex-vivo bone bioreactor systems for implant evaluation.
Dr. Dua has held multiple academic faculty appointments, including Assistant and Associate Professor roles at Hampden-Sydney College and Hampton University, and he currently serves as Affiliate Faculty in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Virginia Commonwealth University. In parallel, he has worked with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) as an Associate in the Materials Science and Engineering Division, contributing to research & development of advanced material.
He has authored numerous high-impact, peer-reviewed publications in biomaterials, implants, and nanoengineered surfaces, and has secured over $1M in competitive federal research funding as Principal Investigator. He has also served on review and grant panels for the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Defense. His career bridges academia, federal research, and industry leadership, including prior service as Director of the Division of Polymers & Materials at the American Dental Association Science & Research Institute, where he led multidisciplinary teams and translational materials programs.
Dr. Dua currently serves as Treasurer of the Orthopedic Implants Section of the Orthopedic Research Society and has held multiple leadership roles within the Virginia Academy of Science, the Biomedical Engineering Society, and related professional organizations. He founded Materials Metric to deliver rigorous, standards-driven materials characterization and analytical services, helping industry, startups, and research organizations accelerate development with confidence and scientific integrity.
